![]() ![]() Rarely favored by the critics, Triumph was often depicted by the Toronto media as a business rather than creative venture. To wit, Peter Goddard described its music as 'a kind of over-weaning, head-bending music that seriously challenged Rush's supremacy as the masters of the sonic clout' ( Toronto Star, ). Initially its instrumentation, high-tech, power-rock style, and the pyro-technical nature of its performances brought Triumph comparisons to Rush. A video of its performance in 1987, in front of 250,000 people at the US Festival in California, Live at the US Festival, was issued by MCA. Its touring itinerary took it to similar arenas and stadiums throughout North America, and to England in 1981. It performed regularly at Maple Leaf Gardens 1978-87 two concerts there a week apart in April 1985 were sold out. The trio moved quickly from local high schools and Ontario bars to concert halls, making its first US appearance in San Antonio, Tex, in 1977, and its first Canadian tour in 1978. And the opening mission is the most stylish of the lot, starting in a neon-lit Amsterdam bar shortly after New Years Day, and taking you to the damp city rooftops as you chase a target.īut then there's the rest, which often feel like mediocre remakes of the more middling Call of Duty missions of yesteryear. ![]() There are stealth missions that give you a chance to approach things more, erm, diplomatically. The mission manages to make you feel deeply uneasy throughout, like a monster is waiting around the corner despite the brightly lit building, ultra-shiny linoleum floors, and funny snippets of NPC dialogue. One takes place entirely in the headquarters of the KGB, and it's all quiet hustle, no machine gun muscle. Weirdly enough, the monotony sets in on the more fast-paced missions you’d expect from a Call of Duty title - it’s the slower ones that hit differently. The fun moments break up long periods of monotony that shouldn't exist in a campaign that's this short (it took me a little over five hours to beat it). The fact that one of your ending choices is technically impossible according to previously established lore doesn't seem to matter all that much - it's just fun and games. These moments feel like the franchise can never get out from its own shadow - especially the Black Ops titles, which so often deal in historical representations of America the Savior. There are moments when the "do anything to save America because Ronald Reagan says so" energy starts to give you a red-white-and-blue icepop brain freeze. The musical stylings of Black Ops Cold War mirror its campaign's contents. ![]() ![]() ![]() I made sure to stay at the main stage for We Are Scientists who injected a healthy dose of quirky charm and unadulterated fun into the festival. ![]() In a festival landscape often dominated by bombastic displays, I thought they offered a poignant reminder of the power of raw emotion and unfiltered authenticity. It was a set containing a visceral urgency that cut through this afternoon crowd. No doubt influenced by the death of Sinead O’Connor who they dedicated their performance to, they painted a chilling portrait of the human condition with each lyric delivered. James McGovern’s haunting vocals oscillated between vulnerability and primal fervour. From the moment they stepped out, it was evident to me that the band were on a mission to captivate and conquer. Part of that is due to the groundwork - foundation, if you will - that was laid in Season 1, which established the life-or-death stakes of Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) and Gaal Dornick’s (Lou Llobell) mission, the Empire that first aided then thwarted them, and the many, many secondary and tertiary players involved. ![]() Premiering today, the new season has greater urgency and an even grander scope than the first, but it somehow feels more intimate.
